Mokasoft, in Okemos, Michigan, makes software that turns complicated legal calculations into tools attorneys, legal offices, and courts can rely on every day. Web Ascender has been its development, design, and marketing partner since the first product in 2014.

Objective: Turn legal expertise into products people subscribe to

Mokasoft brought deep knowledge of sentencing law and legal workflows. It needed a team to turn that knowledge into subscription software that is accurate, easy to use on a desktop or a phone, and easy to keep current as the law changes. Each product also needed a website that explains what it does, proves it can be trusted, and leads visitors into a free trial.

What We Did

Over more than a decade, we have built and supported a suite of three calculators, each a Ruby on Rails application with its own subscriptions, reports, and marketing site:

• Judgment Interest Calculator (2014) - calculates post-judgment interest on Michigan money judgments, including payments made, and produces PDF summaries
• Michigan Sentencing Guidelines Calculator (2014) - turns Michigan’s 200+ page sentencing guidelines manual into a step-by-step wizard that produces the Sentencing Information Report
• U.S. Sentencing Guidelines Calculator (2025) - a rules engine for the 600+ page federal Guidelines Manual, from offense conduct and drug conversions to criminal history, grouping, and Worksheets A through D

Around the products we built everything else the business runs on:

• Shared foundations - each app built from the last, with Stripe subscriptions and free trials, organizations and users, PDF reports, and admin-managed data so Mokasoft can update the law without a developer
• Websites - Mokasoft’s main site and a marketing site for each calculator, first launched in 2014 and rebuilt in 2024 with pricing, how-it-works, tutorial, and FAQ pages
• Marketing - Google Ads campaigns and landing pages for each calculator, conversion tracking, Mailchimp trial and cancellation email series, and monthly reporting
• Hosting and support - managed hosting, a 2024 move of the applications to an upgraded server, and ongoing improvements to every product
