schema.builders

Draw your database by typing it. Live diagrams, real-time teamwork, and one-click exports.

Database diagrams usually mean dragging boxes around a palette. With schema.builders you write a few lines of DBML, the diagram builds itself, and your whole team can edit it together at the same time.

Key features

Text-first editing

Write DBML with highlighting, autocomplete, and inline errors. The diagram updates as you type, and half-finished lines never blank the canvas.

Real-time teamwork

Edit the same diagram together with live cursors, shared table positions, and presence for everyone in the room.

Import and export

Bring in a Rails schema.rb or SQL from major databases, then export migrations, models, SQL, images, and data dictionaries.

Draw your database by typing it

Planning a database is easier when you can see it. Most diagram tools make you drag boxes from a palette and wire them together by hand. schema.builders flips that around: you describe your tables, columns, and relationships in DBML, a small readable language, and the diagram draws itself.

The editor does the heavy lifting. It highlights DBML, suggests keywords, types, tables, and even column references, and shows errors right where you make them. Drag tables around, pan and zoom, group related tables, or let auto-layout tidy things up. Click a table to jump to its code, and hover a column to light up every relationship it touches.

Built for teams that review schemas together

Open the same diagram with a teammate and you are both in it: live cursors in the editor, live pointers on the canvas, and table moves that appear on everyone’s screen. Under the hood it uses a CRDT (Yjs), so two people typing on the same line at once simply works, with no locks and no lost changes.

  • Live share links - send anyone a view-only link that updates as you type, and switch it off whenever you like
  • Personal and team workspaces - everyone gets a private workspace, and teams are joined by invite link without exposing personal diagrams
  • Version history - every change shows up as a readable diff by person, and any earlier version can be restored in one click

Made for Rails, friendly to everyone else

Drop in your db/schema.rb and get a diagram of your whole Rails app in seconds. Sketch the next feature in DBML, then export the migration and models to drop straight back into your project.

Not on Rails? Import PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, or Snowflake SQL, or start from plain DBML. When the diagram is done, export it as Rails migrations and models, PostgreSQL or MySQL SQL, a Markdown data dictionary, PNG, SVG, or PDF images, or ready-made prompts that give an AI assistant your schema as context.

schema.builders is a Web Ascender product. We design and build custom software for a living, and databases are where every good application starts, so we made the tool we wanted for the job.
