19 Useful Facebook Tips

Whether you are new to Facebook or a seasoned veteran there are certainly a couple tips below that will improve your Facebook experience.

  1. Get your own username aka Vanity URL with Facebook so your profile can be accessed like http://www.facebook.com/johndoe versus  http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=834848743
  2. Create Facebook friend lists to organize your contacts and separate your work and personal life
  3. Control who can see that you are online / offline for chat by accessing the chat area, viewing your Friend lists and clicking the icon next to the list to ‘Go Offline’
  4. Double check your profile privacy settings.  It is recommended to only show information to your Friends.
  5. While chatting you can show special icons / images by typing things like  :)  shows a smile.   3:) shows a devil.  (^^^)  Shows a shark.  :|[ shows a robot.   <3  a Heart.  O:) an Angel.
  6. When to create a group and when to create a fan page
    1. Fan pages are for businesses, public figures, organizations and entities.
    2. Groups are for organizing people for a single cause and is more community run
  7. Review your photos on occasion and untag yourself from anything you wouldn’t want your co-workers or parents to see
  8. Use the privacy page to update the settings for ‘Photos Tagged of You’ to control who can see pictures of you
  9. You can control who can post on your wall and also who can see your wall posts.  This will allow you to better run your Facebook page for friends, family and business.
  10. Keeping your Facebook picture the same makes it easier to identify you when others are reading their newsfeed.  However, changing your photo every couple of weeks will get people to view your profile page more often.
  11. Don’t add friends you do not know, this can increase the likely hood of someone trying to scam you.
  12. There is a difference between friend requests and suggested friends; suggested are usually recommended by Facebook but usually those should be ignored.
  13. When posting a status update use the@ symbol followed by the person’s name to link to that individuals profile page.
  14. The poke feature should never be used, no exceptions.
  15. Install applications sparingly, most people are not all that interested in playing Mafia wars or Farmville with you.
  16. Customize your homepage News Feed by hovering over the note icons and deciding to show more or less about each individual.
  17. Go ahead and click that Ignore friend request if you want, they will probably know, and one day maybe they may re-request it but don’t feel bad about ignoring friend requests.
  18. You can use a third party service like www.hootsuite.com to interact with your Facebook information and also schedule status updates to send when you want them to
  19. If you link to a member profile that doesn’t actually exist it will take the viewer to their own page.  So you can make a post like  … I am in love with this person http://facebook.com/profile.php?=73322363  or  I hate this person http://facebook.com/profile.php?=73322363  and when they click on it, it will take them to their own profile page.  You can probably get more creative than that to play a good joke on them!
